RGB vs CMYK and the differences

KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CMYK & RGB!

What is the difference between CMYK and RGB when it comes to printing, At the basic level RGB colour mode is used mainly for digital communications like television or websites. CMYK is used for print pieces like brochures and business cards.

RGB stands for the three primary colours, Red, Green and Blue. This model uses light to make their colours bright and if you were to mix all three of them you would get a pure white. Your screen mixes red, green and blue light to produce the colours you see on your screen.

CMYK on the other hand, Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black (key) uses a subtractive model. This means that the colours from the spectrum are subtracted from natural white light into pigments or dyes. These pigments are then printed digitally onto substrates or paper as tiny dots. If you take a magnifying glass to these images you would see the main image is just rows of tiny dots spread out.
This is what’s also known as DPi, dots per inch. Looking at the image as a whole, this makes it appear to the human eye that all the colours are correct.

MODERN PRINT

Depending on the substrate or medium, some modern printers make the ink dots merge slightly, creating more colours than a standard CMYK print set up.
Here at Ant Print, we prefer all artwork to be produced or sent in using the CMYK colour pallet.
This is due to most of our work, such as posters, flyers, business cards, mugs , sublimation items and other products, use CMYK inks to print with.
Any of our digital products will use RGB such as graphic designs for websites or animations, garment printing or vinyl decals can also be either CMYK, RGB or Cast, depending on the materials used.

Cast colour is mainly for paint and pigmented colours, these are classed as the best for print, colour wise and for longevity of image.

Knowing the difference between RGB, CMYK and Cast, can help you to better understand the print process and how that process affects your completed work or project.
